The festival runs ten days and ends with idols carried to the sea, and the city genuinely stops for it. It is one of the few times a visitor can stand inside something enormous without being a spectator at it.
Festival dates move every year with the lunar calendar. If you want to travel around one rather than into one by accident, ask early.
