The second-best room in a great hotel beats the best room in a good one

This is the single highest-return decision in an India trip and most people get it the wrong way round.

Faced with a budget, the instinct is to buy the top category at a mid-tier property. What you get is a larger room in a building that does not have the grounds, the staff ratio or the location.

Take the entry-level room at the extraordinary place instead. You will be in the same gardens, eating in the same courtyard, looked after by the same people, in the same part of the old city. You will sleep in a smaller room. You were asleep.

There is one exception worth knowing. At true palace properties the cheapest category is sometimes in a modern wing built in the nineties, and that is a genuinely different experience from the palace itself. Ask which building the room is in. Good hotels answer that question straight.

This is most of what we do when we place people: not finding the famous hotel, which anyone can do, but knowing which room in it is the one worth having.
