The packing list is short and everybody ignores it

Not what to bring. What people wish they had brought, which is a much shorter list and almost never the same one.

Socks for temples. Covered in its own post and still the single most useful item on this list.

A scarf or large stole. Shoulders, head, sun, air conditioning, dust, and a cushion on a long drive. One item, six jobs.

Shoes you can get on and off standing up. You will do it constantly.

Layers for the mornings. Between November and February the north genuinely is cold before sunrise — which is exactly the hour you will be at the Taj, on the water at Varanasi, or in an open jeep.

A power bank, because the day is long and your phone is your camera.

Hand sanitiser, small notes, and a spare pair of glasses if you wear them.

What you can stop packing: a month of medication for illnesses you will not get, a full first aid kit, water purification tablets, and six changes of clothes per week. Laundry comes back same day almost everywhere and it is excellent.

Pack for the mornings and the temples. The rest is available here.
