December is not the best month. It is the most booked month.
Those are different claims and the industry is happy to let you confuse them.
Late December through early January is peak across most of India: rates at their highest, the good rooms gone months out, Amber and the Taj at their most crowded, and in the north a genuine chance of fog that closes airports and delays trains for hours.
Fog is the part nobody mentions when they sell you Christmas in Rajasthan. It is a real feature of north Indian winter mornings and it does not care about your connection to Udaipur.
What we would actually pick, for a first trip to the north: late October into November, or late February into March. Comfortable, dry, open, and the same hotels at a different price.
If your dates are fixed by school holidays, that is fine and it is most people. The move then is to build the trip around the fog rather than pretend it will not happen — later starts, fewer internal flights, and a driver who knows which road stays open.
